Stephen King is no stranger to the world of comic books. He's worked on titles such as American Vampire , and his work has been adapted by other writers in The Dark Tower and Creepshow comics. King's tale of a violent, futuristic reality-TV show pits contestants against murderous bounty hunters. While there was a cinematic adaptation in starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, it wasn't faithful enough to its source - despite its status as a bonafide cult classic.
It is strange that The Running Man has not been given a second chance considering its obvious influence on the popular Battle Royal genre. A comic book series would be a perfect way to tell more stories set in this fascinating universe, or even to retell the novel more in step with the original vision. The Dead Zone features a narrative and premise as evergreen and tantalizing as anything in King's catalogue.
The Dead Zone follows a man who wakes up from a coma with psychic powers. He must make the decision to act upon his visions to stop a future disaster, even if it means taking the life of another person. A tale filled with political corruption and the eternal question of whether a bad deed can cancel out something worse, The Dead Zone could well be retold in a present-day setting.
A comic book series could use the fantastic premise to talk about the troubles of today.
